The state of Assam is the world's largest tea-growing region, lying on either side of the Brahmaputra river and bordering Bangladesh and Burma. The Assam region experiences high levels of precipitation during the annual Monsoon season, as much as 10-12 inches per day! The high temperatures and moist air create a greenhouse-like environment, and it is this and the rich, river-flooded soil that gives Assam teas their unique malty flavor.
Assams tend to be full-bodied and bright with malty notes. They take well to milk, and may be blended with other teas or with fruits without losing their distinctive flavor.
